Beyond the Blue: My Encounter with the Manta "Cyclone" at Hanifaru Bay

There is a specific kind of magic that happens when you slip into the waters of Hanifaru Bay. Within minutes of leaving the shores of Maalhos, you find yourself at the edge of a UNESCO Biosphere Reserve, treading water in anticipation. Then, it happens: a dark shadow emerges from the sapphire depths, followed by another, and then twenty more.

During the manta season (May to November), Hanifaru Bay becomes a natural theater for one of the ocean's most spectacular events. The mantas here engage in cyclone feeding — a mesmerizing spiral where dozens of these gentle giants spin in a coordinated dance to feast on plankton.
